Kunming Residents Pray for Good Luck during Spring Dragon Festival
People in Kunming city celebrated the Spring Dragon Festival on March 21 by holding dragon dances and having their hair cut. The Spring Dragon Festival falls on the second day of the second month of the lunar calendar. Chinese people hold the tradition of praying for good weather from the mythological dragons responsible for rainfall.
The city's Heilongtan Park put on a dragon dance in which ten performers manned a 16-meter-long black dragon. Thousands of visitors were attracted to the celebrations and made their annual wishes by patting the dragon.
"The dance makes young people feel more familiar with traditional folk culture," as attendee commented.
It is also believed that cutting hair on the day of the Spring Dragon Festival can bring about good luck. Yet despite some barbershops and hairdressers increasing their prices, people came in their droves to get their haircut. "We may accept 400 customers today," said Liu Yan, owner of a hairdressing shops.
